Women of the Word: Mary Magdalene #10: The Resurrection

Image
Mary is crying.  Jewish people took the first seven days of mourning so seriously that mourners could not wash, work or even study the law. Jewish culture was serious about expressing rather than repressing grief. She hears Jesus call her name: "Mary". She recognizes him at last: "Rabboni!"  Mary addresses him as 'teacher'.  Rabboni is less formal and more personal than using Rabbi.   Have you thought of this before?  That He first shows himself to Mary Magdalene.  Not the disciple whom He loved.  Not His mother.  MARY MAGDALENE.  This moment is what sets her apart from every other person in the entire Bible.   Was it her faith?  Was it their closeness?  Was it prophesied? Whatever the reasoning, Jesus first appeared to Mary M.   Of course, she is amazed and in awe.  He tells her to go and let the disciples know what she has seen.   Normally men were sent as messengers, and male prejudice agai...

Women of the Word: Mary Magdalene #9

On Good Friday after three hours on the cross, Jesus cried out to His Father and was gone.  All four Gospels state that Joseph of Arimathea retrieved Jesus's body for burial. Joseph was known as a "secret" follower of Jesus.  A wealthy man who may have been a "respected member of the Council". He purchased a linen shroud and then he removed Jesus' body from the cross. Nicodemus (if you recall, he was a Pharisee and he had a nighttime discussion with Jesus previously) accompanied Joseph. He brought 75 pounds of spices to prepare Jesus's body.  This abundance showed Nicodemus' wealth as well as his respect for Jesus. Jewish custom would have his body wrapped in linens mixed in myrrh and aloe.  The cave that Jesus was buried in may have belonged to John of Arimathea, it is not completely clear.  As it was getting close to dusk on the Day of Preparation, they left shortly after.  The morning after the Sabbath, the women, including Mary Magdalene, return...

Please join Sandra at Diary of a Stay-at-Home Mom for Happy Homemaker Monday! The Weather:::    Still going up and down, but now it's between lower 50s and upper 60s.  As I look outside my window::: Still ugly and bare - but the huge pile of snow across the street has finally melted.  Right now I am::: Avoiding doing the two emails at work that I have left.  They are way too involved for how I am feeling right now.  Thinking and pondering::: Feeling pretty down. My oldest is moving out in two days.  My youngest is officially moving to New Hampshire the third weekend of June.  That leaves my son and fiancĂ© - and they don't get along.  I'm giving Jake until the end of July to find a place.  That will give Jeff and I a couple of months to move up north.  On my bedside table::: Same as always - books, journals, laptop, etc.  On my tv this week::: The Chosen YouTube Days of Our Lives  Listening to::: A YouTube video, bir...
