Five Ways to Stay Close to God When Life Gets Busy
I want to be close to God—but I don’t know how to stay focused with all this going on.
If that is you, let me reassure you of this truth:
He's still here.
He is waiting for you to call out to Him. In the midst of the chaos. He doesn't need your life to slow down; He'll help you find a way. He doesn't need you to follow a perfect routine; He just wants to share in your time.
“The Lord is near to all who call on Him.” (Psalm 145:18, NIV)
1. Redefine What “Closeness” Looks Like in This Season
A lot of us think to be close to God we have to spend long, uninterrupted quiet time with Him every day. Bible open in front of us, head bowed, listening in stillness. While those moments are beautiful, they are not the only place where your relationship can grow.
In busy seasons, closeness often looks like a comfortable companionship.
A whispered prayer while folding laundry
A verse tucked in the sun visor of your car
A breath prayer in the middle of a stressful workday
Five minutes staring up at the trees
God meets us where we are. He knows our hearts.
“My sheep listen to my voice; I know them, and they follow me.” (John 10:27, NIV)
You can listen for His voice through the noise. He knows how to find you in the middle of it.
2. Trade Discipline for Gentle Rhythms
When life gets overwhelming, many women (myself included!) respond by trying harder—adding more plans, more rules, more pressure. Then you feel guilty because there are things left unchecked on your to-do list. But guilt isn't conducive to building a deep relationship.
Instead, ask yourself:
What is one simple habit that I can do daily so it becomes a rhythm?
Just one. Really. One.
Reading a single Psalm each morning
Writing a one-sentence prayer before bed
Listening to Scripture while waiting in the school pick-up line
Putting on praise & worship music while you cook dinner
Small, faithful rhythms create space for God to meet you consistently. And over time, once you feel comfortable, maybe you add something else. Or you don't.
“Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.” (Matthew 11:28, NIV)
Jesus invited people just like us to come to Him. Weary. Burdened.
3. Learn to Pray Short, Honest Prayers
When life is full, prayers often need to be short and sincere.
God isn't measuring the words; He's looking at your heart.
Some prayers for hard days:
“Lord, help me stay aware of You.”
“Give me wisdom for this moment.”
“God, I need you."
These prayers anchor your soul throughout the day.
“The Spirit helps us in our weakness… the Spirit himself intercedes for us.” (Romans 8:26, NIV)
Even when words fail, God is still near.
4. Guard One Small Space From Noise
You may not be able to quiet everything—but you can give yourself a little something.
Choose one small space:
The first five minutes of your morning
The last moments before sleep
A corner of your home where Scripture rests
Post-it notes with who God says you are on your mirror
This space becomes a reminder: God has a place here.
“Be still, and know that I am God.” (Psalm 46:10, NIV)
Stillness does not require silence; it requires intention.
5. Remember: God Is Not Asking for More—He Is Offering Himself TO YOU
When life is busy and chaotic, the enemy whispers that you are failing.
But God’s invitation remains the same: Follow Me.
And He doesn't expect you to be perfect to do so.
“Surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.” (Matthew 28:20)
You're doing your best. Let God in to do His.
If you're walking through a hard season, I’ve created a free printable set of scripture memory cards to help you stay anchored to God throughout the day.
You can place them in your planner, Bible, car, or on your nightstand.
If this post encouraged you, I invite you to join the Well‑Versed Women community. A small (but growing!) quiet, safe place for women who desire peace, wisdom, and faith.
You are not walking this season alone.
