Sunday Post and It's Monday - What Are You Reading?

I am joining in with Kimberly @caffeinated book reviewer for the Sunday Post

I am also joining in with The Book Date for "It's Monday! What are YOU Reading?"

LAST WEEK ON THE BLOG:

                              NEXT WEEK ON THE BLOG:
This week I plan to post this post, of course, along with my weekly Happy Homemaker Monday and I hope to do a review of "Evelina" and perhaps another weekly meme if I can find one that applies to me!

WHAT I READ LAST WEEK:
Last week I finished:                  Too Late by Colleen Hoover

I love Colleen Hoover - but I did not love this book.  Too many "F" bombs and too many unneeded sex scenes for my taste.  Still give it *** for the story.

From Amazon:

Sloan will go through hell and back for those she loves.
And she does, every single day.
After finding herself stuck in a relationship with the dangerous and morally corrupt Asa Jackson, Sloan will do whatever it takes to get by until she's able to find a way out.
Nothing will get in her way.
Nothing except Carter.

Sloan is the best thing to ever happen to Asa. And if you ask Asa, he'd say he's the best thing to ever happen to Sloan. Despite Sloan's disapproval of Asa's sinister lifestyle, he does exactly what he needs to do in order to stay a step ahead in his business. He also does exactly what he needs to do in order to stay a step ahead of Sloan.
Nothing will get in his way.
Nothing except Carter.

I enjoyed this one immensely.  There are some really great moments of hilarity and a lovely main character.  Written in letter form, this is an enjoyable read, especially if you are a fan of Jane Austen-type novels. **** Stars

From Amazon:

First published in 1778, this novel of manners tells the story of Evelina, a young woman raised in rural obscurity who is thrust into London’s fashionable society at the age of eighteen. There, she experiences a sequence of humorous events at balls, theatres, and gardens that teach her how quickly she must learn to navigate social snobbery and veiled aggression. Evelina, the embodiment of the feminine ideal for her time, undergoes numerous trials and grows in confidence with her abilities and perspicacity. As an innocent young woman, she deals with embarrassing relations, being beautiful in an image-conscious world, and falling in love with the wonderfully eligible Lord Orville. Burney gives the heroine a surprisingly shrewd opinion of fashionable London. This work, then, is not only satirical concerning the consumerism of this select group, but also aware of the role of women in late-eighteenth century society, paving the way for writers such as Jane Austen in this comic, touching love story.

Really good action book series.  For what it is, I give it ***.5 stars.  If you like family drama/murder/detective/strong woman main character - give this series a go.  It's offered on Kindle Unlimited.

From Amazon:

The discovery of human remains unearths another nightmare from Sheriff Bree Taggert’s past in a bone-chilling thriller by #1 Amazon Charts and Wall Street Journal bestselling author Melinda Leigh.

Twenty-seven years ago, Sheriff Bree Taggert’s father killed her mother, then himself. Now Bree and her younger brother, Adam, find human bones on the grounds of their abandoned family farm. The remains are those of a man and a woman, both murdered in the same horrible way.

When the investigation determines the murders occurred thirty years ago, Bree’s dead father becomes a suspect, forcing Bree to revisit the brutal night she’s spent most of her life trying to forget. The only other suspect is an unlikely squatter on the Taggert farm who claims to know secrets about Bree’s past. When he mysteriously disappears and Bree’s niece is kidnapped, the cold case heats up.

Bree has stoked the rage of a murderer who’ll do anything to keep his identity—and motives—a secret. To protect everyone she loves, Bree must confront a killer.

  1. So many good looking thrillers for you. I have been seeing Hoover books at several blogs but I appreciate your comments about the bad language which I can do without.
I have listened to one Melinda Leigh and liked it. The others are new to me (except the classic of course).
Have a good week and Happy Reading!

    1. I love classics, Christian Fiction - and thrillers. It's an odd combination I guess! I understand having to show your character has a bad mouth on him or whatnot - but you can do that without having to repeat the same awful word hundreds of times. I've read 5 of her book. This one was the worst with language and graphicness.

      Enjoy your reading this week!

  2. I have heard of Melinda Leigh, but never read any of her books. I notice that book is the 4th in the series...is that a series you've been reading or did you start with that one? - Melinda @ A Web of Stories

    1. Yes, I started with the first in this series - but it was a couple of years ago! I really like the main character. She's a fierce and smart lady but she loves her family and has a sense of humor!

      Have a great week reading!
