Women of the Word, March: Mary Magdalene #1
Mary was a very common name in Biblical times. We have:
* Mary, Jesus’ mother
* Mary, mother of James
* Mary of Bethany, the sister of Lazarus and Martha
* Mary Salome
* Mary of Clopas
* Mary, mother of James
* Mary of Bethany, the sister of Lazarus and Martha
* Mary Salome
* Mary of Clopas
The subject of our March study is also known as Mary of Magdala, the Magdalene, or Madeleine. She is named twelve times in the Gospels. She was an important woman in the lives of Jesus and his disciples, so I feel like she should be important to us as well.
She was a Jewish woman from the fishing port of Magdala which was located on the western shore of the Sea of Galilee among the eastern foothills of Mt. Arbel.
This city was partially excavated in 2007-2008 and later in 2016 in The Magdala Project. The most stunning find was this Magdala Stone:
I am very excited to delve deep into her life and get close to this woman who served closely with Jesus. She was his friend. They must have laughed together, perhaps told each other stories from their youth around a crackling fire. She may have cooked meals for him. What WONDERS He must have told her! What miracles she witnessed!
Tomorrow I will post a calendar of what we will be discussing over the month of March (and God willing I will be able to keep up unlike last month - but life happens!) Have a blessed week, sisters!
