The Monday Book Report, Edition #4

I am linking up with

MY WEEK IN REVIEW: Overall, not too bad. The weather went from hot and humid to windy and chilly (love).  Decorated my house for fall and bought pumpkin spice everything.  Missed my chance to go to the library (going Monday).  I bought a few e-books and finally received the book I've been waiting for in the mail!

WHAT DID I READ THIS WEEK:  I only finished two books again this week.  Darn life keeps getting in the way!  I need to find a way to fit in more reading time.

Nora Robert's "Year One"
I started out really loving this book - but as I continued reading, it just sort of became fuzzy with so many different characters, many of whom had so many different types of "gifts".  It is definitely a different genre than Roberts generally writes, and I do appreciate that.

Year One is sort of a cross between an apocalyptic thriller and a fantasy novel.  I didn't really care too much about any of the characters, which is probably why I wasn't crazy about the book.

I give this book 3 ***.  I most likely will not be reading the sequel now, as for me, it seemed to fall short the further I got into it.

The second book I finished was also apocalpse-related.  It is "The Alliance" by Jolina Petersheim.  This is another odd look at the apocalypse .... this time through an Amish community.  Seeing things through different eyes definitely made this an interesting read.  It was also intriguing to see what the pacifists might do if faced with a personal threat to their families and livelihood.  I give this one 4****.

FAVORITE QUOTE FROM A BOOK I READ: I did not highlight any quotes from either book

Skin by Ted Dekkar $2.99 Kindle
The Madwoman Upstairs by Catherine Lowell  $.99 Kindle
How to Find Love in a Bookshop by Veronica Henry   $1.99 Kindle

In my mailbox:

FINALLY!  I received Lark Rise to Candleford and it is such a lovely edition! Including shipping I believe I paid about $8.50.

WHAT IS THE BOOK I MOST WANT TO GET MY HANDS ON RIGHT NOW: Same as last week, Marilla by Sara McCoy.

WHAT ARE MY READING PLANS FOR THE UPCOMING WEEK: I have started Elizabeth Gaskell's "North & South".  I may also read "How to Fall in Love in a Bookshop"

Fall Into Books readathon starts today on I am a Reader and Clean Wholesome Romance!  It's going to be fun, check it out!

ANY NEW BOOK EVENTS OR BOOK NEWS ONLINE OR IN YOUR TOWN?  This is from a few months back, but an 11-year-old Detroit girl published a book!  How awesome.

ANYTHING READING RELATED, ETC.:  Another upcoming readathon I plan to participate in is the FraterFest RAT hosted by the Caffeinated Reviewer.  Looking forward to some spooky reading!

  1. I wish the temperatures here would drop down. I couldn't wait for it to cool down and started decorating for fall a couple of weeks ago. LoL

  2. Thanks for sharing your honest review of Nora Roberts Year One. I've seen this book at WalMart and now I know not to pick it up lol

Here's my post Jackie's Forget Me Nots

  3. I love it when it gets windy and chilly- my favorite time of year. :) And pumpkin spice everything ha ha.

Fraterfest looks like a fun October event.

  4. I hope to listen to How to Find Love in a Bookshop on audio at some stage. Hope you enjoy it. I passed on Year One, it just didn't sound like one I'd enjoy for the reasons you didn't really.

  5. Luckily here, the weather is still warm, though we have been getting quite a bit of rain.
